Franco Sarto Brings ‘La Dolce Vita’ To San Francisco Feet

It was a particularly warm San Francisco day last Thursday (82 degrees on Market Street), the perfect temperature for Italian designer Franco Sarto, along with Vogue magazine, to unveil the Italian’s Spring line of gumdrop-colored platform sandals and espadrilles at Nordstrom City Centre. From Azur blue espadrilles to sunshine yellow platforms, Franco Sarto Shoes are giving women a little Dolce Vita for the feet-a. (ok, that was bad)

The designer himself said, “Beautiful shoes should be one part sophistication, and one part wit.” Though he spoke through a translator, he was talking my language. I love shoes, and Franco Sarto shoes blend style and comfort, whimsy, and an affordable price point that make them a must in every woman’s closet. But what I love most about Franco Sarto shoes is Franco Sarto himself. From the moment I stepped into the store, the adorable designer had me by the shoe strings.

Dressed in a deconstructed grey blazer, pocket handkerchief, and summery white pants, and looking like he just came from an languid lunch on the Amalfi Coast , Sarto said he thought our colors went well together (I wore bright blue to match his “April” shoe, shown below). His charisma was intoxicating and guests naturally gravitated toward his warm eyes, full of curiosity and sincerity. Sipping San Pellegrino and listening to the Mediterranean music mix in the background, I couldn’t get enough of the Dolce Vita vibe punctuated by Sarto’s friendly, funny, and clearly in love with what he does attitude.

Sarto is the driving force behind the actual designs and has been making a U.S. tour to introduce his new line to cities around the country. Franco Sarto shoes can be found at Nordstrom and Ambiance in San Francisco.

Born in 1949 in Dolo, a small town outside of Venice, Sarto was working in a shoe factory by the time he was 14. While the technician in him continually pushes to make women’s shoes as comfortable as possible, the designer side of Franco Sarto lives for creating fashionable feet.

Before I left, two pairs of Franco Sarto shoes in hand, he said ”All women deserve to wear beautiful shoes.” I couldn’t agree more Mr. Sarto. In my broken Italian, I told him that I had already purchased two pairs. He asked me why I speak Italian (I don’t really ) but I told him I had married an Italian. ”Congratulazioni!” he enthused, hands in the air, as if I had just won the lottery.

Franco Sarto's Italian roots show in Sandal designs this season

One of the leaders in worldwide brands, designer Franco Sarto, started out at age 14 working in a shoe factory in his hometown of Dolo, outside Venice, Italy.

This is the time of year the heavy boots and closed shoes give way to more revealing foot fashions, and strappy sandals, along with the perfect nude pump or heel, are major players.

One of the leaders in worldwide shoe brands, designer Franco Sarto, started out at age 14 working in a shoe factory in his hometown of Dolo, outside Venice, Italy.

Sarto brings a variety of stylish platforms, slides, espadrilles, pumps and sandals to the retail market. He has released his collection of shoes for Spring/Summer 2011, and it is no surprise that classic Greco-Roman shapes and slave girl-styles infuse his collection, as his collection offers something for every woman at a reasonable price.

Woven leather criss-crosses the foot in several flattering shapes, and his newest flat sandal, my favorite is the "Gia," a chic, flat sandal with a toe-loop and crossed leather top that hugs the foot in the right places.

Sarto, who started out as a cobbler in a factory, still hand sketches many of his designs. He learned how to work with shoes at an early age, to make them, and then started considering fashion more and more in the actual design.

By his early twenties, Sarto knew shoes and fashion were to be his life, so he moved to Stra - the center of shoe design for all of Italy. He quickly partnered with another designer and opened up a design studio. In 1990, he launched his namesake line. Today his brand is known worldwide.

The Master’s Touch

Dedication and passion have a way of permeating great works of art. Those with the finely tuned instinct see it in a brushstroke, a touch of color, or the smoothness of a marble surface. Even the casual observer picks up on this aura of excellence and beauty. Among the many objects of precision and art are the creations of Italian master cobbler Franco Sarto. Behind his craft lays decades of experience and love that make each shoe a stroke of art.

Franco Sarto’s Spring-Summer collection presents seven of the latest styles that encompass all women. From the bolder Punched Out and Studded Out to the classically cut Back-to-Work, the collection spans demographics to offer a taste of quality and style to everyone. Women can prepare for the summer weather with the Exotic Traveler and the Isle of Capri lines that feature tribal prints and jute and jewels, respectively. American Vintage is capable of bringing out the square-dancing cowgirl in all of us, while Soft Touch provides the dainty and feminine foil with bows and knots.

With over 20 years of careful crafting with hammer and of designing with pen and paper, Sarto keeps true to his vocation without the need for technology. “There is a sense of love that is there with the traditional [ways of making shoes],” Sarto explains. “Software can only give an image. It’s not something I can feel. I need to touch the shoe, from heel to the [design on top].” Indeed, it’s this master’s touch, the intuition that one garners from years of honing their skill that makes Franco Sarto’s shoes not only a thing of beauty, but an object of quality and luxury.

It is these two inseparable things that set Franco Sarto apart from other shoemakers and brands. “To me, the design of the shoe and the making of it go hand in hand. If I were to design a beautiful shoe, but make it so uncomfortable, then it would just sit in the store. And if I were to make a very comfortable, but ugly, shoe, then it would still just sit in the store. No one would want either.”

His extensive training in the making of shoes has led to his reverence for the often overlooked art of making the shoe. This he oversees with as much attention as he can afford. Yet he revels in the moment of discovery at the very beginning of developing a collection. “It’s that moment when you start to think, the starting point, just like how a woman becomes excited at the idea of buying something rather than at the actual buying,” he shares. This moment of inspiration and limitless possibility is by far his favorite of the design process.

“The women I’ve seen here in Manila can easily be the women that I see walking down the streets in New York and Milan. Styles have become global,” says Sarto. It is this universality that he strives to achieve with each pair of shoes he creates. “There was a moccasin that first came out seven years ago, the Bocca, which became a favorite of all ages of women. In fact, it’s still being produced because of the high demand. I love to see that, when my shoes are worn by all women for a long time.”

And, for as long as he can, Franco Sarto will be providing women around the world with luxurious heels dipped in artistry.
